I love when a client gives me the chance to test my colour matching capabilities. Armed with images of her space, I sought to create a blend of hues that would enhance her environment but not distract from the neutral palette she had established. With this piece, I learned the nuanced challenge of mixing acrylics, as they typically dry darker than their wet appearance suggests. This taught me patience as I had to wait to see each dried shade before mixing the next.
The process became a meditative exercise in restraint and precision, forcing me to slow down my usually intuitive approach. Each layer required careful consideration, building a subtle depth that complements rather than competes with her existing décor. The final piece achieves a delicate balance—present enough to add character to the space yet harmonious enough to feel as though it had always belonged there. The client's delight upon installation confirmed that sometimes the most impactful artistic choices are the most restrained ones. This commission has fundamentally shifted my approach to colour work, emphasising that sometimes the most challenging palette is the quietest one.
