Rhythms of heritage, 2024

From the moment I created Paten I knew I wanted to make murals. Ekóma gave me the opportunity in November 2024.

Ekóma, an organisation championing artistic outputs that represent Afro-Caribbean, Melanesian & Aboriginal heritage, posted a mural opportunity for their Parallel Frequencies exhibition and I jumped at the chance to potentially create my first mural. The theme was works that explore the connection between Afro-diasporic music, sound, and culture-how sound shapes, reflects, and evolves in the context of Afro-diasporic history, traditions, innovation, and global influence.

I decided to interpret this theme by incorporating various regional African textile prints into my signature motif, creating a visual rhythm that complemented the exhibition's focus. When my mock-up was accepted, I was completely shocked! I dedicated roughly 35 hours over four days bringing my vision to life at Metropolis, a wonderfully vibrant food court in Vauxhall. Throughout the process, both staff and diners were brilliantly supportive and genuinely fascinated by my work.

The notion that my artwork will remain on that wall indefinitely is a privilege I truly treasure. This experience has only fuelled my passion for large-scale public art—I simply cannot wait to create more murals in the future!
